I mentioned recently that I wrote a weird poem, Marginalia to Stone Bird. It is nonlinear and can be read in many ways (as in, easily more than 3). I sent it off already, but meanwhile I couldn't keep thinking how I hear it in voices, layered over each other, repeating, echoing -and how cool it would be to record it as an mp3 with at least two other people. I think I would need at least one male voice for this. And I keep hearing very faint music, like raindrops or plucking of strings, only I do not play any instruments, of course. And I was also thinking about how much I loved the trailer to Palimpsest and how wonderful it would be to make something like this for my Stone Bird.

I lack technical capabilities to do any of this, except to collect images and to record parts of the poem.

I might get a rejection of it tomorrow, I don't know if it's a prudent thing to do, but heck, I really want to try this, at least the mp3 part.

Any ideas about how I can approach this would be very, very welcome :)

No ideas but
I want to hear this!

I don't know how to do it or what hardware you'll need but you can record the sounds/speakers individually and then combine the tracks later on using software (can't be mp3 though, you must be using the raw files for editing).

many things can work with mp3s transparently. just minor audio loss.

audacity is a good program for playing around.

I'd be happy to record something next week if you get things figured out, as a "male voice" (though you probably have folks on your friendslist with voices "more male").

No ideas, of course.

Good luck :)

Huh, audacity crashes if I try to record two streams...
Izzat just me?

You could be the italics, maybe... o.o

Admittedly, it does sort of make my mind go splodey to think of kaolin as a monk. But, y'know, if he was a monk, he'd be writing poetry in the margins.

Kaolin can be the unknown monk. But who will be Taddeusz of Mazov? (I insist on being Rose Lemberg!)

Taddeusz cannot be a woman, I'm afraid :D

What sort of voice does he have to you?
I imagined it rather deep.

Kaolin's voice is very light. So I'd think, comments on stone, yes, but not the initial stone.

Kaolin would make the right kind of monk for this poem imho :D

Muahahahah! Hmm. Yes. Imagining myself without a computer, there would be lots of scribbling in the margins. :)

Try it sometimes. Is fun! :D

I remember my first glossed manuscript, where some monk left comments like "Look here!!" (where the original MS has advice against procrastination), and "this is FINGER MAGIC" where the original MS has an astronomical table...
Obviously the monks had a lot of fun.

Yay! Thanks Kaolin!

But I have no idea how to merge them on audacity or anything :P

Audacity is one of the most straight forward audio editors--you can drop tracks in (files) and slide them around, play to see how it all sounds together, and "mix and render" it down.

If you go this route with it I can try to help :)

That's a gorgeous idea! I really hope it works out. I've rarely tried audio editing, but when I did, I used audacity (to combine two streams, as I recall). I'm not sure if it will come out the way you imagine, but it's worth a try. :D Oh, and you can probably find a decent rain background somewhere on the web... just search for "rain sounds". Hopefully you can find/record all you need and combine them. Best of luck & let me know how it goes!
