[Error: unknown template qotd]I just saw this prompt on the LJ front page and this question is so out there that I have to answer it.
One of my professors once told me a touching story about a graduate student at Stanford who, after four years in a certain program, grabbed a crowbar and smashed his advisor's head. After spending the appropriate number of years in prison, he got out and applied to the Philosophy program in our illustrious school, and got in. Retroactively the history of his viking-style exploits came to light, and the acceptance was withdrawn.
I am not sure if this is a true story; the person who told me this was a folklorist.
Regardless of the narrative's veracity, my advisor- and in fact, my whole committee - get to live.
